In this world, it’s easy to feel like we have to earn love. We are taught that love is transactional, that if we do enough, say the right things, act in the right way, then we will be loved in return. It’s exhausting, isn’t it? But here’s the radical truth that sets us free; God’s love doesn’t work that way. His love is not something we earn. It’s not something we can lose. It simply is. And it’s the deepest, most transformative force we will ever encounter.
This week, as we dive deeper into our journey of living beyond now, let’s pause and reflect on the boundless, unconditional love of God. A love that existed before we even knew how to reach for it. A love that surpasses all understanding, reaching past our failures, our doubts, and our fears, to say, "You are mine, and I am yours." God’s love is constant. It’s pure. It’s eternal.
God’s Love: The Foundation of Our Lives
Think about this for a moment: God loved us before we even knew how to love Him.
In Romans 5:8, it says, “But God commendeth his love toward us, in that, while we were yet sinners, Christ died for us.”
This wasn’t just a passing love or a love based on who we were or what we could give Him. No. God’s love for us is unconditional. It doesn’t depend on our perfection. It doesn’t depend on our “worthiness” or how many “good deeds” we’ve stacked up. It simply is.
I often think about what this means in our daily lives; to be loved like this. It means we are not defined by our failures. We are not weighed down by our imperfections. The weight of expectation we place on ourselves to be “enough” is lifted because He already says we are enough. He loves us first. He loves us fully. And He will never stop.
Our Response to Such a Love: Obedience
Now, if God’s love is as unconditional as we know it is, how should we respond? What does it look like to live in light of such a love?
Jesus said in John 14:15 “If you love me, keep my commandments.”
At first glance, this might seem like a difficult and perhaps even burdensome command. But as we learn to live in God’s love, we come to realize that obedience isn’t about fear or performance. It’s about trust. It’s about choosing to align our hearts with His will because we believe in His love for us. Imagine what it means to live in response to a love so deep, so pure, that it invites us to be transformed. Every commandment is not a rule to be followed for the sake of duty but an invitation to draw closer to the heart of the One who gave everything for us.
When we love Him, when we experience the fullness of His love, obedience becomes a joy, not a burden. It becomes a natural outpouring of the trust we place in Him, the gratitude we feel, and the hope He has instilled in us.
Seeking Him with All Our Hearts
“But if from thence thou shalt seek the Lord thy God, thou shalt find him, if thou seek him with all thy heart and with all thy soul.”
One of the most beautiful aspects of God’s love is that He desires to be sought. He calls us into a deeper relationship, a relationship that goes beyond surface-level interaction. And He doesn’t want us to seek Him half-heartedly. He desires us to come with our whole hearts, to long for Him, and to trust that He will meet us in that place of longing.
In Matthew 7:7-11, Jesus encourages us to ask, seek, and knock: “Ask, and it will be given to you; seek, and you will find; knock, and the door will be opened to you.”
He promises to answer our requests and meet our needs, but this isn’t just a promise for material things; it’s a promise that He will be there for us in every area of our lives. He will be present in our pain, our joy, our confusion, our moments of celebration. He is always there, waiting for us to ask for more of Him. Seeking God doesn’t just mean asking for things; it means seeking His presence, seeking His will, and seeking His heart. It’s a deep pursuit, one that changes us. When we seek Him, we find not just answers, but a relationship, one that nurtures our soul and guides us through every season of life.
Living Beyond Now: The Invitation to Live in His Love
This is the invitation-to live beyond the here and now, beyond the temporary struggles of our day-to-day lives, and to be anchored in a love that transcends time. A love that can transform the ordinary into the extraordinary. A love that gives us hope for tomorrow and peace for today.
As we journey through this life, God invites us into a deeper experience with Him. We are not simply called to exist. We are called to live in His love, to love others as He loves us, and to live out our purpose with the fullness of His presence in our hearts.
So, today, I ask you: Will you respond to God’s unconditional love? Will you seek Him with your whole heart, trusting that He will meet you exactly where you are? Will you live beyond now, in the deep, unshakeable love of the One who will never leave you, never forsake you, and always invite you to more?
